EdenPURE Heaters: Yet another expensive space heater

OMG, It's Bob Vila!

OMG, It's Bob Vila!

I was finishing up November's Popular Science magazine last week and I was at the point where I started getting to the bad advertisements at the end of the magazine. And much to my surprise, I see yet another expensive space heater advertisement that claims to reduce your energy bills by 50%. This was a different ad than the Sunheat heater; however it is basically the same product with one major difference: Bob Vila endorses it! Woo hoo!!!

This heater is called EdenPURE, and it honestly looks like the same device. From a forum on the topic comparing EdenPURE and Sunheat a person says:

If you look at Sun Heat and EdenPure, their offers are nearly identical. From what I understand from a local dealer for Sun Heat, EdenPure is a spin-off of theirs, made by a guy who used to work for Sun Heat! Prices are very similar also. EdenPure has a plastic casing. Sun Heat is wood and both have Honeywell thermostats.

And yet the best review of EdenPURE and other expensive space heaters (like Sunheat) comes from one of hte most trusted resources out there: Consumer Reports. From the Consumer Reports review of the EdenPURE heater:

The unit was the second-lowest-scoring space heater we tested, earning only a 24 out on our 100-point scale. According to the folks in our Tech department who tested space heaters, the EdenPure provided lackluster temperature control and was not particularly easy to use, What's more, it was pricey and lacked an overheat-protection feature (key for safety). The GEN3 models do have this important safety feature, according to BioTech Research.

If you're in the market for a new space heater, be dubious about any heater whose manufacturer claims the appliance will slash your heating bills. Here's why:

For every degree that you lower your home thermostat in the winter, you'll save about 3 percent on heating costs. So the only way to really save with a space heater would be to use the unit in the room you're in and turn down the thermostat elsewhere in the house so that your main heating system would not operate. To save 50 percent on your heating bill, you'd have to lower the home thermostat about 17°F. Also, based on national average fuel prices, using an electric space costs more than twice as much to operate as a natural-gas-fueled central-heating system.

Here's an article from ripoffreport written by someone who used to work at the company that makes Edenpure. I believe it because they aren't trying to sell anything, just give advice. I wouldnt put too much stock in the warehouse workers though, I'm sure a lot of companies have those problems.

Some of the more common complaints I've read about the Edenpure heater:

 • Quartz bulb burns out
 • Too expensive (about $300) for a space heater you can buy at Wal-Mart for 1/10th the price
 • Doesn't put out enough heat
 • Raises electricity bills

But hey, at least it wont catch your house on fire.

Bottom Line:

The reason they say it will cut your heating bill by 50% is that you are changing from central heat, to a space heater. This means that you have to move the heater around to each room you are in to stay comfortable. It's a change in strategy, not a new amazing product. I'm going to take our a lame ad in Popular Science with the slogan:

SLASH your Energy Bills FOREVER!!!

Do you know what I'll be selling? A Snuggie.

Snuggie: Slashes heating bills!

Snuggie: Slashes heating bills!

Eden pure is pure 100% overpriced junk. Made in communist china which says a lot about the quality. Unit worked for several months and then nothing.

I thought it was made in the U.S.?
The EdenPURE is a big hack, good marketing, nice design, air purification for buzzword some meta-celebrity advertisement and that's it. I sent my EdenPURE back for refund after few days of testing. Main reason because for that price I wanted it to be perfect, and it wasn't. Such priced space heater can not allow itself to be loud like the EdenPURE GEN 4 is. I bought a Bionaire BH3950 heater review instead and is totally noiseless and more effective in heating than the EdenPURE ever was for less cheaper.
I have two Honeywell oil filled radiators with electronic thermostat that are silent and have three power/heating levels. Caught them on sale last year at Target for $60.00. Retail is $69.99 and they work great. Wheels allow easy movement and a folding handle. I am very pleased with both and on right now! Zero maintenance too!
Listen folks, use common sense here. Save you money and get a 94-97% fuel efficent furnace for heat. Before I start ,let me get this out of the way, all those Amish heaters are made in China !! If you believe the Amish actually make space heaters I have some oceanfront property to sell you in Arizona. Home heating oil is sky high and propane isnt cheap either. If you have a wood burner or fireplace, use those, wood isnt cheap either. Any heater that you plug in consumes a lot of electricity. Natural gas is still the cheapest heat available unless you get free wood to burn. If an offer sounds to good to be true it is!
I am out of work right now, and short on money. My house, with heat pump, does not heat well in frigid cold. Was going to pinch pennies and buy one of these smaller EdenPure models...but after all that I've read....I'm not wasting my money that is so short at this time. Hate to be cold...but would really be riled by wasting money and STILL be cold or with messed up crappy unit. Thanks for all the input.

I would just go to your local hardware store and ask them which unit they recommend. I would get one with a thermostat on it.
Bob villa was fired from this old house show yrs ago for taking kickbacks for endorsements. Looks like he did not learn a lesson. Loser. I wouldn't buy anything he endorses. Crook.

Wow, you're right, from Wikipedia: "Bob Vila, the original host, left in 1989 following a dispute about doing commercials and created a similar show called Bob Vila's Home Again. According to news reporter Barbara Beck, Vila was fired by WGBH Boston over making TV commercials for Rickel Home Centers, Home Depot's competitor. Home Depot, the show's underwriter, dropped its local sponsorship for This Old House after Vila made the commercials. Vila was fired in an effort to have Home Depot return as a sponsor to the show."
I ordered this heater because I trusted Bob Villa , I got it today 1/9/2012 and am sending it back as soon as possible. I called my bank and had them cancel fitire payments for this heater , they said it would cost me $30.00 for a stop payment I said it is way better than paying 4 paymnents of 80.00 plus . plus who knows how much on electric . I am just gonna buy me a wood heater . I use propane . thanks for all your comments it really helped me think better . and yes shame on bob villa
